Most Washington renewals take a few minutes through License eXpress. The two things that catch people out are the alternating rule and the assumption that any valid license works for flying.

Can You Renew Your Washington Driver License Online?
Only if your last renewal was done in person. Under RCW 46.20.120, Washington permits online or mail renewal only when the previous one happened at a counter, so the state gets a fresh photo and a face-to-face identity check on a regular cycle.
If you renewed online last time, this one is an office visit. No exceptions.
You must also renew in person if:
- You’re 70 or older
- You’re applying for or renewing an Enhanced Driver License
- You need a new photo — the system may force this if yours is over 12 years old or your appearance has materially changed
- The DOL has flagged you for a vision screening
- Your name has changed, or your address needs updating
- Your license is suspended, in which case clearing it comes first
There’s a third option people miss: renewal by phone on 360-902-3900, available if you’re under 70 and last renewed in person.
Washington’s Standard License Isn’t REAL ID Compliant
This is the most consequential fact on this page, and it’s specific to Washington.
Unlike most states, Washington’s standard driver license does not meet federal REAL ID standards. It’s valid for driving and general identification, but it won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint.
Washington’s answer is the Enhanced Driver License (EDL) — one of only a handful of such credentials in the country. It’s federally accepted for domestic flights, and it also works for land and sea border crossings into Canada and Mexico, which a REAL ID alone doesn’t do.
The trade-offs: an EDL costs more, requires proof of U.S. citizenship, and always requires an office visit, at every renewal rather than every other one. Federal document validation runs each time it’s issued.
If you fly or cross into Canada, renewal is the natural moment to upgrade. If you don’t, a passport works as an alternative and the standard license is fine.
Washington License Renewal Deadlines and Late Fees
You can renew from one year before expiration, and Washington accepts renewals up to eight years after.
Renewing early costs you nothing — the new term runs from your prior expiration date rather than the date you renewed.
There’s no late fee within 60 days of expiration. Past that, DOL adds $10 to whichever tier you’re on. That doesn’t make it legal to drive on an expired license, and you can still be ticketed from day one.
How to Renew a Washington Driver License Step by Step
Step 1: Check Which Method Applies to You
DOL sends a courtesy renewal notice by email, postcard or letter. Work through the in-person triggers above first — discovering one mid-transaction wastes the attempt.
Have your license number, Social Security number and payment ready. For an EDL, you’ll also need proof of U.S. citizenship.
Step 2: Renew Online, by Phone, or in Person
Online through License eXpress at dol.wa.gov. Sign in, confirm your address and details, choose a six- or eight-year term, and pay. Online renewal reuses your photo on file and relies on self-reported vision.
A note on payment: DOL charges a 3% card fee for online transactions. Paying by e-check from a checking account is free. Debit cards are processed as credit, and a debit convenience fee adds $2.25. On an $81 renewal the 3% is about $2.40 — small, but avoidable.

In person at a Driver Licensing Office. Note Washington splits its offices — Driver Licensing Offices handle licenses; Vehicle Licensing Offices handle tabs and titles — and a vehicle office can’t renew your license. You’ll take a vision screening at the counter.
Step 3: When Your License Arrives
Online renewals process in 1 to 3 business days, with the card mailed in about 7 to 10 business days. In-person renewals issue a temporary license at the counter, with the permanent card arriving in two to three weeks.
Washington License Renewal Rules for Drivers 70 and Older
From 70, you must renew in person at every renewal, regardless of how you renewed last time. You’ll take a vision screening and have a new photo taken.
Appointments are preferred but not required.
On vision: if you fail the counter screening, you’ll need a report from a vision specialist before a renewed credential is issued. Best corrected acuity worse than 20/70 results in a restriction against night driving rather than a refusal.

Worth noticing: at $61 for six years versus $81 for eight, the annual cost is almost identical — about $10.17 a year either way. The eight-year term simply saves you a transaction, and given the alternating rule, it also pushes your next office visit further out.
