North Carolina License Renewal Deadlines and the Two-Year Cliff
You can renew up to 180 days before your license expires, and it expires on your birthday.

Sources differ on whether drivers over 66 can still use online renewal — some describe a firmer in-person requirement, others don’t, and a separate age limit of 72 applies to mail renewal for residents temporarily out of state.
Rather than guess, check your renewal notice. It states the method available for your specific record, and that’s the only answer that matters.
How to Renew a North Carolina Driver License Step by Step
Step 1: Check Your Renewal Notice
It arrives about 60 days out and tells you whether you can renew online or need an office visit. Have your license number and Social Security number ready.
If you’re upgrading to REAL ID, you’ll also need your birth certificate or passport, your Social Security card, and two proofs of North Carolina residency.
Step 2: Renew Online or in Person
