How to Renew Your Idaho Driver’s License

Idaho runs driver licensing through county sheriff’s offices, separately from the county assessor offices that handle vehicles. Which office you need depends on what you’re renewing.

Just moved to Idaho? That’s a first-time application rather than a renewal. Note that college students and active-duty military holding a valid license from another state, and claiming residency there, don’t need an Idaho license at all. Start with transferring your license to Idaho.

The short version

  • You can renew online, and ITD gives you $5 off for doing it. At least one major guide still says Idaho offers no online renewal. It does.
  • 25 months works both ways — renew up to 25 months early, or up to 25 months late without retesting.
  • The Star Card costs nothing extra. Idaho’s REAL ID carries the same fee as a standard license.

Can You Renew Your Idaho Driver’s License Online?

Yes, in many cases — and it’s cheaper. The Idaho Transportation Department states plainly that many drivers can renew online, and that eligible customers who renew online qualify for a $5.00 discount on the renewal fee.

Log in or create a DMV online account to see whether you’re eligible. If you’re not, any local driver’s license office can handle it.

Worth flagging because at least one well-known national guide still tells Idaho drivers that online renewal isn’t offered. It is, and using it saves $5.

You must renew in person if:

  • You’re younger than 21 or older than 69
  • Your license has been expired more than 25 months
  • You obtained an extension on your current license
  • You’ve already renewed by mail at least once in the last eight years
  • You’re getting or renewing a Star Card
  • Your name has changed, or your address needs updating
  • Your license is suspended — in which case clearing it comes first

Mail renewal is by invitation, generally for drivers aged 21 to 69, and adds a $1 sheriff’s administrative fee. Your existing photo is reused.

The 25-Month Rule Works Both Ways

Idaho uses the same figure at both ends, which is unusual and worth knowing.

You can renew up to 25 months before your license expires — more than two years of runway, the longest early window of any state.

And up to 25 months after expiration without retesting. Past that, you’ll retake the knowledge test, and potentially the skills test too.

There’s no grace period for driving, though. An expired Idaho license is citable from the day it lapses, with fines reported up to $150. The 25-month window governs how you renew, not whether you’re legal on the road.

Commercial licenses are stricter: a CDL expired 25 months or more requires the Class D written test, all CDL written tests, and a skills test in the matching vehicle class.

Idaho License Renewal Rules for Drivers 63 and Older

Two thresholds, doing different things.

From 63, your cycle shortens to four years. Under Idaho Code § 49-319(1), the eight-year option is available only to drivers aged 21 to 62. Everyone 63 and over renews every four years.

From 70, you must renew in person. Online and mail routes close entirely, regardless of record.

A vision screening applies at every renewal, at every age — not just to older drivers. If you fail, the examiner may require a Vision Exam form completed by an eye doctor or vision specialist.

Idaho does not require a written test on age grounds. An examiner can request a skills test or medical examination where there’s specific concern, and family members, doctors or law enforcement can request an Unsafe Driver Investigation — but neither is triggered by a birthday.

How to Renew an Idaho Driver’s License Step by Step

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Log into the DMV online portal first. It tells you whether online renewal is open to you, which decides everything else.

Have ready: your license number, Social Security number and payment. For a Star Card, you’ll also need proof of identity and legal name, your Social Security number, and proof of Idaho residency.

Step 2: Renew Online, by Mail, or in Person

Online through the ITD portal — fastest, and $5 cheaper.

By mail, if invited. Choose a four- or eight-year term on the application, enclose payment plus the $1 sheriff’s fee, and post it to the address on the form. Card payments may attract a service charge.

In person at a driver’s license office. Two things to check first: not all offices offer driver license services, and some — Bannock County among them — are appointment only and don’t accept walk-ins. Our guide to Idaho DMV offices explains the sheriff-versus-assessor split.

You’ll take a vision test and have a new photo taken.

Step 3: Decide on the Star Card

Idaho’s REAL ID is called the Star Card, and renewal is the natural time to get one because it costs no more than a standard license.

It does require an in-person visit with your documents. Our guide to the Idaho Star Card covers exactly what to bring.

Step 4: When Your License Arrives

The new card is posted, typically arriving in about 12 to 14 days. Destroy your old license once it does — Idaho asks you to, and it’s no longer valid.

Idaho Driver’s License Renewal Fees

ItemAmount
Online renewal discount$5.00 off
Mail renewalAdds a $1.00 sheriff’s administrative fee
Star Card (REAL ID)Same as a standard license — no surcharge

Idaho’s license fees vary by age and by the term you choose, and published figures disagree. The $5 online discount and the $1 mail fee are confirmed by ITD and county sheriffs — for the base fee, check the current figure on the ITD portal or with your county office before paying.

Idaho Driver’s License Renewal FAQs

Is the Star Card worth it?

It costs nothing extra at renewal, and Ada County Sheriff’s office actively encourages drivers to take one when renewing. The only cost is the in-person visit and bringing your documents. Without it, you’ll need a passport to fly domestically.

My license expired two years ago. Do I have to retest?

No. You’re inside the 25-month window, so a standard renewal applies — though you’ll need to do it in person, and you shouldn’t have been driving in the meantime.

I’m 64. Why can’t I get an eight-year license?

Idaho Code limits the eight-year option to drivers aged 21 to 62. From 63 you’re on a four-year cycle, which also means shorter gaps between vision screenings.

Can I renew online if I’m 71?

No. From 70, Idaho requires in-person renewal and closes both the online and mail routes.

Does renewing my license renew my vehicle registration?

No. They’re handled by entirely different offices — sheriffs for licenses, county assessors for vehicles. Registration renewal is a separate transaction with age-based fees and no inspection requirement.

Two things to check before you start: whether the online portal says you’re eligible, since that’s worth $5, and whether you want a Star Card this time — because that decision costs nothing but does require the trip.
