Both have to happen at a license office with a clerk present. There’s no self-certification route and no alternating online cycle — every Missouri renewal is an in-person visit.

This is the part people don’t expect, and Missouri is one of only a handful of states that still does it.
You’ll be shown road signs and asked what they mean. It’s a recognition check rather than a written exam, and it takes a couple of minutes — but walking in cold, having not thought about sign shapes since your original test, is an unpleasant surprise.
The vision screening runs at the same visit, testing for 20/40 acuity in your better eye with corrective lenses if you use them. Bring your glasses.

Missouri License Renewal Deadlines and the Six-Month Window
Your license expires on your date of birth in the final year of its term, and the Department of Revenue sends a renewal notice about 60 days beforehand.
After expiration you have six months — 184 days — to renew without retesting. Miss that and you must take the written and driving tests as though you were a new applicant.
The window doesn’t let you drive. It governs how you renew, not whether you’re legal on the road. Driving on an expired Missouri license is citable from the day it lapses.

Step 1: Gather What You Need

If your license is suspended or revoked, renewal won’t proceed — clearing it comes first. If your address has changed, update it so your residency proof matches your record.

A timing tip worth using: offices are busiest at the end of each month, when registration renewals bunch up. Going in the first week is materially quicker.
At the counter you’ll take the vision screening and road sign test, have your photo taken, and pay.
Step 3: Decide on REAL ID
If you want a REAL ID-compliant license, say so at this visit. The upgrade is included in the standard renewal fee— there’s no separate charge in Missouri.
You’ll need the supporting documents: proof of identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of Missouri residency rather than one.
Step 4: When Your License Arrives
You leave with a temporary paper license. The permanent card is mailed within 7 to 10 business days, in a plain unmarked envelope — so don’t discard it as junk mail.
Missouri License Renewal Rules for Drivers 70 and Older
One thing changes at 70: your renewal cycle shortens from six years to three. The fee drops to match.
That’s the only change. The vision and sign tests already applied at every age, so there’s no additional screening triggered by turning 70, and no medical certificate or road test required purely because of age.
Drivers under 21 are also on a three-year cycle, so the card aligns with the 21st birthday design.
