How to Change Your Address with the Missouri DOR

When you move to a new address in Missouri, you’re in a race against the clock. The law requires you to update your driver’s license within 30 days.

But here is the single biggest mistake you can make: assuming your driver’s license and your car registration are on the same record. They are not.

If you only update your driver’s license, your vehicle registration renewal notice will be sent to your old address, leading to fines and a potential suspension. This guide will show you the correct, two-part process to update both records and stay 100% legal.

The “Two-Record” System: Driver vs. Vehicle

This is the most important concept to understand. The Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) maintains two separate records for you:

  1. Your Driver License (DL) Record: This is your driving privilege and personal identification.
  2. Your Motor Vehicle (MV) Record: This is your property record (your car’s title, registration, and plates).

You must update both of these, and they often require separate steps.

How to Change Your DRIVER’S LICENSE Address

This is your first priority. You have three ways to do it.

Method 1: Online (Fastest & Easiest Way)

This is the recommended method and updates your record instantly.

  1. Visit the official DOR online portal for address changes: https://mydmv.mo.gov/change-of-address
  2. You will need the following to log in and verify your identity:
    • Your Missouri Driver’s License Number (DLN)
    • Your Date of Birth
    • Your Social Security Number (SSN)
    • Your current phone number and email
  3. Follow the prompts to enter your new residential and mailing addresses.
  4. Submit the form. This updates your record in the system for free.

Method 2: By Mail

You can mail a form to the DOR. This is slower but useful if you can’t use the online portal.

  1. Download the Form: You must complete Form 4160 (Address Change Request).
  2. Complete the Form: Fill out your personal information and new address. Be sure to check the box for “Driver License Records.”
  3. Mail the Form: Send the completed form to the DOR address listed on the form (PO Box 100, Jefferson City). This is free and updates your record.

Method 3: In-Person (Walk-In)

You can do this at any DOR License Office (the same place you get your plates). This is a walk-in service.

  • This is the only method you can use if you also want a new physical license card with your new address printed on it (see Section 4).
  • This is also mandatory if you are getting your first REAL ID.

How to Change Your VEHICLE REGISTRATION Address

This is the critical step everyone forgets. You must also update the address on your car’s title and registration records.

  1. Check the Box: If you used the mail-in (Form 4160), you can simply check the box for “Motor Vehicle Records” and list your license plates.
  2. Do it at Renewal: The easiest way is to use your new address when you renew your plates. Your renewal notice will be mailed to your old address, but you can take it to any DOR License Office and provide your new address at the counter.
  3. Go In-Person: You can also walk into any DOR License Office at any time and ask them to update your Motor Vehicle (MV) record address.

The “Optional Fee”: Free Update vs. Paid Card

This is the second biggest point of confusion.

  • It is 100% FREE to update your address in the DOR’s system. You can use the online or mail-in method, and it costs $0. Your old license with the old address is still legally valid as long as the system is correct.
  • You only pay a fee if you choose to get a new, replacement driver’s license card. This is a “duplicate” license, and the fee is $14.00 ($20 for a CDL). You must go in person to a DOR License Office to get this.

FAQs from Missouri Residents

I changed my DL address online, but my renewal notice went to my old house! Why?

This is the #1 problem. You fell into the “Two-Record” trap. You updated your Driver’s License (DL) record but forgot to also update your Motor Vehicle (MV) record. You must do both.

I just moved. How long do I have to change my address?

New Resident (Moving to MO): You have 30 days to get a new Missouri driver’s license and register your vehicle.

Current Resident (Moving within MO): The law states you must notify the DOR of your new address immediately (within 15 days is a good rule of thumb).

Do I need to show proof of my new address to update it?

Online or By Mail: No. You just need to provide your DLN, SSN, and DOB to verify your identity.

In-Person (for a new REAL ID): Yes. If you are visiting a license office to get your first REAL ID, you mustbring two (2) proofs of your new address (like a utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement).

Does changing my DOR address also update my voter registration?

Yes. The online portal and the mail-in forms will both ask you if you want to update your voter registration address at the same time. This is the easiest way to do it.
