Wyoming’s Disabled Veteran (DV) license plate is processed through your county treasurer’s office, not WYDOT directly. And, like several other states in this region, the plate itself does not authorize handicapped parking.
If you need disabled parking access, you will be filing a completely separate application. Here is the full process for getting your DV plate, claiming your registration fee exemption, and applying for your parking placard.
Who Qualifies for a Wyoming Disabled Veteran License Plate?
To qualify for the Wyoming Disabled Veteran plate, you must meet three criteria:
- A 50% or greater service-connected disability rating.
- Currently receiving compensation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Wyoming residency at the time of both your initial application and any subsequent renewals.
The plate is available for a passenger car, pickup truck, motorcycle, or multipurpose vehicle that you own or lease.
The Primary Benefit: Wyoming DV Plate County Registration Fee Exemption
The primary reason to get the Wyoming DV plate is the financial benefit. Veterans who meet the 50% threshold and register a vehicle with a DV plate receive a full exemption of county vehicle fees on one vehicle. Depending on the value of your vehicle, this can save you hundreds of dollars every single year.
How to Apply for a Wyoming Disabled Veteran License Plate: Step-by-Step
1. Confirm Vehicle Ownership
The vehicle must be titled in your name, or held in joint ownership with a member of your immediate family. Plates issued under this program follow the qualifying veteran, not just the vehicle, so ownership documentation matters at every renewal.
2. Complete the Application
Download and complete the Disabled Veteran License Plate Application from the WYDOT website. You will need to attach proof of your VA disability rating (such as a Summary of Benefits letter) along with the completed form.
3. Submit to Your County Treasurer — Not WYDOT
Unlike states where the central DMV processes plate requests, Wyoming routes this application through your local county treasurer’s office. Submit your application at least 30 days before your current vehicle registration expires, since plate production and county processing take time.
4. Renew Annually at the County Level
Wyoming’s specialty plates are physically reissued once during an eight-year plate design period, but your vehicle registration must still be renewed annually, no later than the last day of your registration month. Renewals are handled at the county treasurer’s office.
Adding a Second Plate: with DV plates already on your primary vehicle, you can buy one additional set for a motorcycle or multipurpose vehicle — but at regular registration fees. If you’re paying full price anyway, a specialty or prestige plate is worth comparing.
Important: Wyoming Disabled Veteran Plates Do Not Include Handicapped Parking Privileges
Wyoming Disabled Veteran plates cannot be used to park in designated handicapped spaces. That requires a separate parking placard — free, but it needs physician or APRN certification that your VA rating alone doesn’t satisfy.
How to Get a Wyoming Handicap Parking Placard as a Disabled Veteran
To legally use handicapped parking spaces in Wyoming, you must complete the Application for Disabled Parking Identification Placard.
This form requires medical certification by a licensed physician or advanced practice registered nurse—your service-connected disability rating from the VA does not, by itself, satisfy this requirement. Placards are free.
How to submit the placard application:
- Online (Fastest): You can upload your signed medical form and apply entirely online through Wyoming’s new oneWYO portal (mvds.onewyo.gov). The placard will be mailed to you.
- In-Person or Mail: You can also drop the form off at a local Wyoming driver exam office or mail it to WYDOT Driver Services in Cheyenne.
A Strategic Note on Placards vs. Plates: You have the option to request a disabled license plate instead of a hanging placard. However, if you choose the disabled plate, you cannot display the DV plate on that vehicle. The smartest strategy is to keep the DV plate for the fee exemption and use a hanging placard for parking. Permanent placards issued from 20 October 2025 never expire, so there’s nothing to renew.
2025 Update: Permanent disabled placards issued on or after October 20, 2025, will no longer have an expiration date in Wyoming.

No. These plates do not authorize parking in handicapped spaces. You need a separate placard obtained through a medical certification.
Upon transfer of ownership, the registration tied to that vehicle expires and the DV plates must be removed. When you acquire another vehicle you can transfer the DV plates without reapplying from scratch — but you’ll need temporary registration from your county clerk to drive it legally while the transfer processes.
