How to Renew Your West Virginia Vehicle Registration

West Virginia splits this between two authorities. Your county sheriff or assessor collects personal property tax. The DMV issues the decal. The second checks the first before it does anything.

Just moved to West Virginia? You have 60 days to title and register, and an out-of-state vehicle needs a one-time VIN verification. Start with transferring your license to West Virginia.

The short version

  • Your county personal property tax must be paid first. The DMV verifies it electronically and the renewal stops dead if it isn’t.
  • $51.50 a year for a standard passenger vehicle, or $103 for two years.
  • The state late fee is $5 — but your city’s might not be. Clarksburg charges $162.

Pay Your County Personal Property Tax First

This is the gate, and it’s the most common reason a West Virginia renewal fails.

You must have paid the county personal property tax assessed on the vehicle for the prior year. The DMV’s online portal verifies payment electronically at the moment you renew — if it’s unpaid, the transaction won’t proceed.

Timing to know:

  • The bill is mailed by your county sheriff or assessor in late summer
  • Payment is due by September 1
  • County payments can take a day or two to appear in the DMV portal, so don’t pay the county and try to renew the same hour

New residents need to visit the county assessor in their county of residence to start the personal property tax cycle. It doesn’t begin automatically.

Does Your Inspection Sticker Affect Your Renewal?

Here’s where published guidance disagrees, so it’s worth being precise.

West Virginia’s safety inspection and your registration renewal run on separate cycles. Most sources — including DMV.ORG and LegalClarity — state that you do not need to show proof of inspection to renew your registration. One national guide claims the renewal can’t be completed without a current sticker; that doesn’t match the rest.

But the sticker still matters enormously. Driving without a valid inspection sticker is illegal in West Virginia, so renewing your registration while your inspection has lapsed leaves you with fresh plates on a car you can’t legally drive.

Practically: check both, but don’t assume a lapsed inspection blocks your renewal.

Inspections cost around $14, with a maximum of $16.50 for most passenger vehicles. Stations are widely available at gas stations, repair shops and dealer service departments.

West Virginia requires no emissions testing anywhere in the state. The safety inspection is the only one.

West Virginia Registration Renewal Deadlines and Late Fees

Your tags expire at the end of the month printed on your decal. The DMV mails a reminder beforehand, and you can begin renewing up to 90 days early. There’s a 30-day grace period after expiration.

The penalty structure has three layers, and only the first is small:

SourceAmount
State DMV late fee$5
Municipal late feeVaries — Clarksburg charges $162
Driving unregisteredMisdemeanor, fines up to $500

That $5 is genuinely modest by national standards, which is why it gets quoted as “the whole penalty.” It isn’t. Cities and counties can assess their own late fees on top, and the figures vary enormously.

How to Renew West Virginia Vehicle Registration Step by Step

Step 1: Clear the Gate

  1. Pay your county personal property tax for the prior year, and allow a day or two for it to post.
  2. Confirm your insurance meets West Virginia’s 25/50/25 minimums and is on file.
  3. Check your address — the decal and card are mailed, so update it before you renew.

Your registration must not be suspended or expired by more than 30 days, and there must be no changes to ownership, address or vehicle, or you’ll need to renew in person.

Step 2: Choose Your Channel

Online through the DMV services portal or the DMV Now mobile app — the fastest route, available 24/7, accepting Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.

At a self-service kiosk, which prints your decal immediately.

At a county sheriff’s office, which adds a $1 service fee.

At a DMV regional office — West Virginia has 26. Bring your completed Form DMV-44-TR or current registration card. Our guide to West Virginia DMV offices covers what to expect.

By mail, which is also the route if you’re a resident temporarily outside the state, including active military.

Step 3: Wait for the Decal

Online and mail renewals post your new registration card and decal within about 7 to 10 business days. Kiosks and counters issue them immediately.

West Virginia Vehicle Registration Renewal Fees

ItemAmount
Class A passenger cars and trucks up to 10,000 lbs$51.50 per year
Two-year registration$103.00
Class G motorcycles$16.00
County sheriff service fee$1.00
Duplicate registration card or decal$10.00
Duplicate license plate$10.50
Lien fee$10.00
State late fee$5.00
Electric vehicle surchargeAdditional annual fee

The $51.50 includes a $1 annual litter fee and a $0.50 insurance enforcement fee — both built in rather than added.

The two-year option is straightforward arithmetic — $103 for 24 months, the same per year as paying annually, but one less renewal to remember. Specialty and vanity plates carry their own annual surcharges on top.

Note that the personal property tax is entirely separate and never folded into the DMV renewal. That bill arrives on its own schedule from your county.

West Virginia Vehicle Registration Renewal FAQs

My renewal was rejected online. Why?

Almost always the county personal property tax. Check with your county sheriff or assessor, and remember payments take a day or two to appear in the DMV portal.

Do I need an emissions test?

No. West Virginia has no emissions program anywhere in the state. Only the safety inspection exists, and that’s separate from your registration.

Is the $5 late fee really all I’d pay?

No. That’s the state DMV’s charge. Municipalities set their own — Clarksburg’s is $162 — and driving on expired registration is a misdemeanor carrying fines up to $500.

Do disabled veterans pay registration fees?

West Virginia offers fee relief for qualifying disabled veterans. See West Virginia disabled veteran plates for eligibility before paying a full renewal.

I’m stationed out of state. How do I renew?

By mail, following the instructions on your renewal notice. West Virginia residents temporarily outside the state, including active military, keep their registration current this way.

Two things decide whether this takes five minutes: whether your county tax is paid and posted, and whether your address is current. Neither is fixed at the DMV — both start with your county.
