Louisiana’s renewal changed more in 2026 than in the previous two decades. If you’re working from a guide written before June, the central requirement it describes no longer exists.
Just moved to Louisiana? You have 30 days to register under La. R.S. 32:707, and initial titling requires an in-person OMV visit because Louisiana requires the title assignment to be notarized. Start with transferring your license to Louisiana.
The short version
- The brake tag is gone. Louisiana eliminated the statewide inspection sticker in 2026, and police stopped issuing citations for it on June 30.
- New Orleans is the exception. Orleans Parish still requires its own city inspection.
- Registration runs on a two-year cycle, with a late penalty of 25% of the annual licensing cost.
Do You Still Need a Brake Tag in Louisiana?
For most drivers, no.
Governor Jeff Landry signed House Bill 1085 on June 2, 2026, ending the statewide vehicle inspection sticker requirement. Law enforcement stopped issuing citations for a missing inspection sticker on June 30, 2026, and the change takes full effect statewide on January 1, 2027.
What replaces it is the Louisiana Vehicle Identification Program — a $6 QR code displayed in your windshield, tied to your registration. It carries your VIN and, for law enforcement, proof of insurance and any outstanding warrants.
Four categories still require inspection:
- Vehicles registered in a city with its own local brake tag program
- Commercial vehicles
- Vehicles transporting students
- Covered farm vehicles over the applicable weight limit
New Orleans Is the Exception
If your vehicle is registered in Orleans Parish, nothing has changed for you. The City of New Orleans has stated that vehicles registered there must continue to pass a city inspection and display a valid City of New Orleans brake tag, and that the statewide elimination does not apply within the city.
Note too that a brake tag from a neighboring parish has never been valid for an Orleans-registered vehicle. Use a station authorized specifically for Orleans Parish.
Emissions Testing in Five Parishes
Emissions testing is a federal requirement under the Clean Air Act and survives the state change entirely. It applies biennially in five parishes around Baton Rouge: East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Ascension, Livingston and Iberville.
Expect to pay roughly $18 to $25. Any future change to these parishes depends on EPA approval of Louisiana’s proposed amendments, so don’t let a certificate lapse on the assumption the requirement is going away.
Louisiana Registration Renewal Deadlines and Late Penalties
Louisiana registrations run on a two-year cycle, with your renewal month assigned by the first letter of your last name or printed on your current decal. The OMV mails a notice about 60 days beforehand.
Operating on an expired registration carries a penalty of 25% of the annual cost of proper licensing under La. Admin. Code tit. 73 § I-1105 — a percentage rather than a flat fee, so it scales with your vehicle.
How to Renew Louisiana Vehicle Registration Step by Step
Step 1: Check What Could Block You
Online renewal is unavailable if you have:
- An insurance gap on record
- An expired emissions certificate, in the five Baton Rouge parishes
- Any registration hold — failure to appear, unpaid parking tickets
You’ll need an OMV office visit rather than online or a tag agent if the registered owner has changed, or if the vehicle’s address has moved to a different parish. A routine address change within the same parish can be handled through the standard update process.
Step 2: Renew Online, at a Tag Agent, at OMV, or by Mail
Online through ExpressLane at expresslane.la.gov, available 24/7. You’ll need your renewal notice or plate number plus the last four digits of your VIN, and a card. Insurance is verified electronically.
At a Public Tag Agent. Louisiana licenses private contractors to handle registration work, and they’re often the better option — shorter waits, evening and Saturday hours, and they print your decal on the spot rather than mailing it. They charge a convenience fee, usually $5 to $15, on top of state fees.
Tag agents can also resolve some issues that block online renewal. Some partner with on-site inspection stations.
At an OMV field office, required for the situations listed above. Our guide to Louisiana OMV offices and tag agents explains which handles what.
By mail to the OMV Mail Center, P.O. Box 64886, Baton Rouge, LA 70896.
Step 3: Your Decal
Renewing online prints your registration certificate at home immediately, with the windshield decal arriving by mail within 7 to 10 business days. A tag agent hands it to you the same day.
Louisiana Vehicle Registration Renewal Fees
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| License plate fee | Value-based — varies by vehicle |
| Handling fee | $8.00 |
| Emissions test (five parishes only) | About $18–$25 |
| Vehicle identification QR code | $6.00 |
| Electric vehicle fee | $110 annually |
| Hybrid vehicle fee | $60 annually |
| Late penalty | 25% of annual licensing cost |
| Public Tag Agent convenience fee | $5–$15 |
Louisiana’s plate fee is value-based, so there’s no single figure — an expensive vehicle costs more than a cheap one. The $8.00 handling fee is set by La. R.S. 32:412.1.
Electric and hybrid fees are set by La. R.S. 47:463.5 and charged annually even though registration is biennial.
Louisiana Vehicle Registration Renewal FAQs
No. Lafayette Parish isn’t one of the five emissions parishes and has no local brake tag program, so most Lafayette drivers face no inspection requirement at all going forward.
Outside Orleans Parish and the commercial categories, no — citations for a missing sticker stopped on June 30, 2026. If you’re in New Orleans, yes, the city requirement continues.
No. The sticker is gone; the obligation isn’t. Officers can still cite a visibly unsafe vehicle, and a defect that contributes to a crash still matters for liability.
Yes, but expect the 25% penalty. Renewal stays available — you simply shouldn’t be driving on it in the meantime.
A Public Tag Agent. They print it on the spot, which beats waiting 7 to 10 business days for an online renewal to arrive by post. The $5 to $15 fee buys you the same-day sticker.
Two things to check before renewing: whether you’re in Orleans Parish or one of the five emissions parishes, and whether anything is holding your record. For most of the state, this is now a shorter job than it has been in decades.
