How to Renew Your South Carolina Driver’s License

South Carolina’s renewal is cheap and the cycle is long, so most drivers do this only a handful of times. The SCDMV sends a notice about 60 days before expiration.

Just moved to South Carolina? You have 45 days, and a first South Carolina license is a different process. Start with getting a South Carolina license from another state.

The short version

  • $25 for eight years — about $3 a year, among the cheapest in the country.
  • Drivers 65 and over renew on the same eight-year cycle as everyone else. The old five-year senior rule was repealed in 2017, though several sites still publish it.
  • Online renewal needs an eye doctor’s certificate transmitted electronically — that’s the real barrier, not the paperwork.

Can You Renew Your South Carolina License Online?

Possibly, but SCDMV’s conditions are stricter than most states’. You must meet all of the following:

  • You have not received violations totaling more than five points on your record in the last two years
  • Your license is not suspended, or subject to suspension
  • You did not renew by mail or online last time — South Carolina makes you alternate
  • You do not hold a conditional or special restricted license
  • Your name and address on file are unchanged
  • You’re not upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time

And the requirement that catches people: an SC-licensed eye care professional must transmit your Certification of Vision Examination (SCDMV Form 412-NC) electronically through the SCDMV portal. You can’t upload it yourself, and a paper copy won’t do.

So “renew online” really means “book an eye exam first, then renew online.” If you’d rather not, an in-person visit includes a free vision screening at the counter.

If points are the obstacle, check your record before you start — five points is a low threshold, and a couple of moving violations can cross it. If your license is suspended, clearing it comes first.

The Vision Test Requirement

Since 2020, every South Carolina driver must pass a vision screening to renew, at any age.

Two ways to satisfy it:

At an SCDMV branch, free of charge, as part of your visit. If you fail, you’ll be given a form for a licensed eye care professional to complete and return.

Through your own eye doctor, using Form 412-NC — which is also the only route if you want to renew online, since the results must be transmitted electronically.

Wear your glasses or contacts to the test if you drive with them.

Do Drivers Over 65 Have Different Rules?

No — and this is worth being clear about, because plenty of sites say otherwise.

South Carolina used to require drivers 65 and older to renew every five years. That requirement was eliminated in 2017, when the state aligned its licensing laws with federal REAL ID standards. Under S.C. Code § 56-1-210(A), all licenses now expire eight years after issue, regardless of age.

You’ll still find guides quoting a five-year senior cycle and a $12.50 senior fee. Those describe rules that haven’t applied for nearly a decade.

There’s no age-triggered road test either. SCDMV can request a re-examination if a physician, family member or law enforcement officer files a report about impaired driving, but that’s based on the report rather than on age.

The vision screening applies to everyone, which is the requirement older drivers most often encounter.

How to Renew a South Carolina Driver’s License Step by Step

Step 1: Check Which Route Applies

Read your renewal notice, then work through the online eligibility list above. If you fall out on any single point, you’re going in person.

Have ready: your current license, your insurance company’s name, and payment.

Step 2: Renew Online or at a Branch

Online through SCDMV Online Services. You’ll pay $25 and receive an eight-year license by mail. SCDMV reuses your existing photograph and signature and sends the card to the address on file — so update your address first if you’ve moved, since an address change also disqualifies you from renewing online.

In person at any SCDMV branch. No appointment is needed for most services. You’ll provide your insurer’s name, pay $25, take the free vision screening and have a new photo taken. The branch issues a temporary paper license.

By mail is available to some drivers, including military personnel stationed out of state. Contact SCDMV directly.

Step 3: When Your License Arrives

The permanent card is mailed within about 10 business days.

South Carolina License Renewal Deadlines: 9 Months and 2 Years

Your license expires on your birthday. After that, two windows matter:

Time expiredWhat applies
Up to 9 monthsYou can still renew online, if otherwise eligible
9 months to 2 yearsIn-person visit and the standard fee — no retesting
More than 2 yearsSCDMV may require the full new-applicant process, including knowledge and road tests

None of this makes it legal to drive. Driving on an expired South Carolina license is a citable offense from the day it lapses — the window governs how you renew, not whether you’re legal on the road.

South Carolina Driver’s License Renewal Fees

ItemAmount
Standard renewal (8 years)$25
Replacement or duplicate$10
REAL ID upgrade at renewalNo extra fee

At $25 for eight years, that works out at roughly $3 a year — among the lowest driver licensing costs in the United States.

SCDMV’s online portal accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. Branches also take cash and check.

South Carolina Driver’s License Renewal FAQs

Do I need a REAL ID?

Only for federal purposes — boarding a domestic flight or entering a federal building. A standard South Carolina license remains valid for driving and everyday identification, and a passport is an alternative. The first upgrade requires an in-person visit with proof of identity, your Social Security number and two proofs of residency. There’s no additional fee.

Why was my online renewal rejected?

Most often the vision certificate hasn’t been transmitted, you renewed online last time, or you’ve picked up more than five points in the past two years. Any one of those closes the online route.

My license expired 14 months ago. Do I have to retest?

No. You’re inside the two-year window, so an in-person visit and the standard fee will do it. Past two years, SCDMV may treat you as a new applicant.

Does renewing my license renew my registration?

No. Vehicle registration renewal runs on a separate two-year cycle and requires your county property tax to be paid first — an entirely different process.

Two things decide how this goes: whether you renewed online last time, and whether you’re willing to arrange an eye exam. Sort both before you start and it’s a ten-minute job.
