How to Get Your Rhode Island Driving Record

Your Rhode Island driving record is the official summary of your driving history. It’s the document insurance companies use to set your rates, employers use for job screening, and the court system uses to track violations.

Many people search for this to “check their points.” In Rhode Island, the only way to see your point total is to order your official driving record.

This guide will show you the fastest way to get your record online, the correct way to get a certified copy in person (it requires an appointment), and how to read the points on your record.

Why Are the Fees Different? (Online vs. In-Person)

This is the most common point of confusion. The price is different because the online system is run by a third-party vendor.

  • Online Record (Unofficial): $20.50. This is the fastest way. The extra $2 is a portal processing fee. This record is for personal use only (e.g., checking your points, insurance quotes).
  • In-Person or Mail-In Record (Certified): $18.50. This is the official, certified record you need for legal purposes(e.g., court, employment, or out-of-state DMVs).

How to Get Your Driving Record (The 3 Methods)

Method 1: Online (Fastest – For Unofficial Copies)

This is the best method if you just need to check your status or point total immediately.

  1. Go to the Official Portal: Navigate to the RI DMV Online Driver Record Service.
  2. Enter Your Information: You will need:
    • Your RI Driver’s License Number
    • Your Last Name
    • Your Date of Birth
    • The 4-digit ZIP code on your license
  3. Pay the $20.50 Fee: Use a valid credit/debit card.
  4. Download and Print: You will be able to immediately download and print your record as a PDF.

Method 2: In-Person (The Only Way for Same-Day Certified Copies)

This method is for getting an official, certified record for a court or job requirement. It requires an appointment.

  1. Book Your Appointment: You must schedule an appointment at the Cranston DMV. Walk-ins are not accepted.
  2. Select the Service: When booking, choose the service “Registration, Records & Licenses.”
  3. Visit the Cranston DMV: Go to your appointment with:
    • Your valid (or expired) Driver’s License or ID.
    • Payment for the $18.50 fee.
  4. Receive Your Record: The clerk will print your official, certified record for you on the spot.

Method 3: By Mail (For Certified Copies)

This is the best option if you are out-of-state or cannot get an appointment.

  1. Download the Form: You must complete the Request for My Driving Record (Form D-8).
  2. Complete the Form: Fill it out clearly. You must sign it.
  3. Include Payment: Include an $18.50 check or money order payable to “RI DMV.” Do not send cash.
  4. Mail Your Request: Send the completed form and your payment to:RI Division of Motor Vehicles Attn: Driver Records 600 New London Avenue Cranston, RI 02920

How to Read Your Record (The RI Point System)

Once you have your record, you will see your violation history. Points are added for moving violations and remain “active” for 3 years.

  • Suspension: Accumulating 12 or more points in a 3-year period will trigger a license suspension.
  • Common Violations:
    • Speeding (1-10 mph over): 2 points
    • Speeding (11+ mph over): 3 points
    • Failure to stop at a stop sign: 2 points
    • Texting while driving: 2 points

FAQs

I have a “Good Driving Record.” Will my ticket show points?

No! This is a unique and important part of Rhode Island law. If you have a clean record for 3 years, your first minor traffic violation (3 points or less) is dismissed. It will not appear on your driving record, and no points will be added.

I live in Massachusetts now, but I need my old RI record. How do I get it?

You must use the By Mail method (Section 2, Method 3). The online system will reject you because your ZIP code will not match the one on your old RI license. You must mail Form D-8 and your $18.50 payment to the Cranston DMV.

I need a copy for court. Is the $20.50 online one okay?

No. The online record is uncertified and for “personal review” only. For any official or legal purpose (court, employment, etc.), you must get the $18.50 certified record either In-Person or By Mail.

My license is suspended. How do I get it back?

Getting your driving record is the first step to see why you are suspended. Your next step is to clear all your compliance items. You can learn the full process in our guide to reinstating a suspended RI license.
