Worried about your insurance rates? Need a copy of your “Motor Vehicle Report” (MVR) for a new job? Or do you just need to know, “How many points are on my license?”
Your Kentucky driving record is the official history of your driving, including all traffic violations and your current point total.
This guide will immediately clear up the biggest myth about getting your record, show you the fastest way to get your 5-year driving record online, and explain exactly how the Kentucky point system works.
The Myth of a “Free” Kentucky Driving Record
Let’s address this first. If you are searching for a “kentucky driving record free” check, you must know this critical difference:
- You CANNOT get your driving record for free. The official record, which lists your history, violations, and points, costs a state-mandated fee.
- You CAN get your license status for free. If your only question is “Am I suspended?” you can call the Division of Driver Licensing at (502) 564-1257. They can verify your status but will not read your full record to you.
To see your actual history, you must order the official report.
How to Order Your Official Kentucky Driving Record (MVR)
You have three ways to get your official “Motor Vehicle Report” (MVR). The online method is the fastest and most common.

What’s On Your Record? (3-Year vs. 5-Year)
When you request your record, you can choose the length.
- 3-Year Driving Record: This is the standard report. It is what most insurance companies use to set your rates. It shows all violations and points accrued in the last 36 months.
- 5-Year Driving Record (Motor Vehicle Report): This is the MVR most commonly required for employment. It is the standard for pre-employment screening, especially for commercial (CDL) or delivery jobs.
- Complete Record: This shows your entire lifetime driving history in Kentucky.
Explaination of Kentucky Point System
Once you have your record, you will see a list of violations, each with a point value. The KYTC will take action based on your point total.
- If you get 7 to 11 points: You will receive a warning letter and be scheduled for a hearing. If you attend, you can choose to go to State Traffic School. If you complete the school, your points are reduced to zero and you avoidsuspension.
- If you get 12 or more points (in a 2-year period): Your license will be suspended.
How to Remove Points:
- State Traffic School (The Fast Way): If you are offered this by a court or the MVD (for having 7-11 points), completing it will reduce your points.
- Good Behavior (The Slow Way): Points automatically “fall off” your record after two (2) years from the conviction date.
FAQs
This is normal. It takes time for the local court to process your payment (which is a “conviction”) and then electronically report that conviction to the KYTC in Frankfort. It can sometimes take 2-4 weeks after you pay a ticket for the points to officially appear on your state driving record.
This is a critical distinction. In Kentucky, points “fall off” after 2 years. However, the conviction itself (e.m., “Speeding 20+ mph”) will remain visible on your record for five (5) years. Most insurance companies will look at this 5-year history when setting your rates.
You must use the By Mailmethod (Section 2). You cannot use the online portal because you no longer have a valid KY license. You must mail Form TC 94-169 and your $5.50 payment to the KYTC in Frankfort to get a copy of your record and see what “hold” you need to clear.
Getting your driving record is the first step. It will show you your reinstatement checklist. Your next step is to clear all those items. We have a complete guide on how to reinstate your Kentucky license that walks you through the full process, including paying fees and filing an SR-22 (if needed).
