The short version
- Renewal costs $24 for four years, or $35 for a REAL ID.
- Most drivers can renew online, and the renewal takes effect right away. Your new card arrives by mail in two to four weeks.
- A license expired for more than three years can’t be renewed. You’ll start over as a first-time driver.
New Jersey driver’s licenses are issued by the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Since 2020, licenses aren’t printed at MVC agencies, so every renewal, online or in person, comes by mail.
Not a standard renewal?
- New to New Jersey? You’ll transfer your license instead. See our guide to an out-of-state license transfer in New Jersey.
- License suspended? It has to be restored before you can renew. Our guide to a suspended New Jersey licensecovers the steps.
- Still on a probationary license? You’ll upgrade to a basic license rather than renew. See our guide to the New Jersey probationary license.
- Commercial license? CDLs can’t be renewed online and follow their own rules.
When You Can Renew a New Jersey License
A basic license is valid for four years. The MVC’s out-of-state renewal form accepts licenses that will expire within the next six months, which is the usual window for renewing early.
If Your License Has Expired
There’s no late fee, but there’s also no grace period for driving on an expired license, so renew as soon as you can. Once it has been expired for more than three years, you can’t renew it, and you’ll go through the process as a first-time driver.
Online vs. In-Person Renewal in New Jersey
Who Can Renew Online: Most drivers can, as long as the license isn’t suspended, isn’t a CDL and doesn’t carry a temporary visa restriction. Online renewals reuse the photo the MVC has on file.
Who Has to Go In Person: The MVC can reuse a stored photo for only two renewals in a row. After that, you’ll renew at a licensing center and have a new photo taken.
Getting a REAL ID: A REAL ID costs $35 and needs an appointment at a licensing center the first time. You’ll bring two proofs of address, proof of your Social Security number and ID documents worth six points. After that, a REAL ID can be renewed online or by mail. A standard license is still valid for driving, voting and ID, but you’ll need a REAL ID or a passport to board a domestic flight.
Drivers 65 and Older: Drivers 65 and older with a standard license can keep using their stored photo at every renewal, so the two-renewal photo limit doesn’t apply to them. At 70 and older, you can also choose a two-year license instead of the usual four years.
How to Renew Your New Jersey License Step by Step
Renew Online
- If you’ve moved, change your address with the MVC first. Our guide to a New Jersey change of address explains how.
- Renew through the MVC’s online services and pay the fee.
- Print your receipt to carry until the new card arrives, usually in two to four weeks.
Renew at a Licensing Center
In-person renewals are by appointment. Our guide to New Jersey MVC appointments explains how to book one.
What to Bring
- Your current license
- ID documents worth six points, which our guide to New Jersey’s 6 Points of ID breaks down
- Proof of your address, or two proofs for a REAL ID
- Your Social Security number
- Payment
Your new license will be mailed to you after the visit.
Renew From Out of State
If you’re temporarily living outside New Jersey, you can renew by mail with Form GU-11, as long as your license has expired, will expire within six months or was lost less than three years ago. The MVC can’t reuse a photo that’s already been used for two renewals, so that case still needs a licensing center visit.
