How to Renew Your New Jersey Vehicle Registration

The short version

  • Most cars cost $46.50 to $84 a year to renew, depending on weight and whether the car is within two model years of new. Drivers 65 and older and people with disabilities pay $7 less.
  • Renew online with the PIN on your renewal notice, which the MVC mails three months before your registration expires.
  • Electric cars pay an extra $270 a year from July 1, 2026. Plug-in hybrids don’t.

New Jersey registrations are handled by the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Most passenger cars renew every year, while a brand-new car’s first registration is paid for four years up front.

Not renewing?

  • Just bought a car? That’s a new registration. Our guide to New Jersey temporary plates covers driving it in the meantime.
  • New to New Jersey? You’ll register your car here as a new resident, and our guide to an out-of-state license transfer in New Jersey covers your license.
  • Dropping your insurance? A lapse on a registered car can get the registration suspended, and restoring it costs $100.

When to Renew a New Jersey Registration

The MVC mails your renewal notice three months before your registration expires. The PIN you’ll need for online renewal is printed in its bottom right corner.

If Your Registration Has Already Expired

The MVC doesn’t list a late fee, but driving on an expired registration is a traffic violation, so renew right away. If the online system won’t take your renewal, book an MVC appointment and renew in person.

What You Need to Renew in New Jersey

Your PIN: The PIN on your renewal notice is required to renew online. If you’ve lost the notice, you can request the PIN through MyMVC.

Insurance: New Jersey won’t register a car, or let you drive one, without liability insurance. You’ll enter your insurance card or policy details when you renew, and a lapse can lead to a suspension that costs $100 to restore.

Inspection: Inspections run on their own schedule: every two years, after a five-year exemption for new cars. Fully electric cars and gas cars from model year 1995 and older are exempt. Driving with an expired inspection sticker can bring a fine of $100 to $200.

How to Renew Your New Jersey Registration

Online Through MyMVC

  1. Enter the PIN from your renewal notice and confirm your vehicle and owner details.
  2. If your mailing address has changed, update it with the Change Address button before you renew. Leased vehicles can’t change it online, and our guide to a New Jersey change of address covers the other ways.
  3. Enter your Social Security number and insurance details.
  4. Pay by credit card. Your renewal takes effect immediately.

If you qualify for a PAAD, SSI or Lifeline fee exemption, you can’t claim it online. Renew in person and bring proof.

By Mail

Fill out both sides of your renewal notice and mail it in the return envelope that came with it, along with a check or money order payable to NJMVC.

At an MVC Agency

In-person renewals are by appointment. Our guide to New Jersey MVC appointments explains how to book one.
