Maine licenses run through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, with 13 branch offices, mobile units, and an online portal for eligible drivers. AAA locations can also handle straightforward renewals.
Just moved to Maine? That’s a first-time application, not a renewal. Start with transferring your license to Maine.
The short version
- $30 for six years under 65, $20 for four years at 65 and over.
- REAL ID is not free in Maine. It adds $25 under 65, or $20 at 65 and over.
- Vision testing starts at 40 — younger than most states — and three different age rules apply.
Maine’s Vision Test Schedule: 40, 62 and 65
Three separate thresholds, each doing something different. Most guides mention one and miss the others.
| Age | What changes |
|---|---|
| 40 | Vision test at your first renewal after turning 40, then at every second renewal |
| 62 | Vision test at every renewal from here |
| 65 | Cycle shortens from six years to four, and the fee drops to $20 |
Starting at 40 is unusually early — most states don’t test until the sixties. And note that needing a vision test closes the online route, so from 62 onward every renewal is an office visit.
Can You Renew Your Maine Driver’s License Online?
Most drivers can. You cannot renew online if:
- Your license is suspended or revoked — clearing it comes first
- You hold a license from another state
- You haven’t provided proof of legal presence to the BMV
- Your name has changed since your last renewal
- You’ve developed a medical condition, or an existing one has changed
- You’re due a vision test under the schedule above
- Your license has been expired more than 90 days
Online renewal also can’t process name or address changes. If yours have changed, update them at a branch first, then renew.
A third option worth knowing: AAA locations process Maine license renewals. They can’t handle name changes, new photographs, or changes to restrictions or endorsements — but for a straightforward renewal they’re often quicker than a BMV branch.
Maine License Renewal Deadlines
You can renew up to six months before expiration, and as late as the expiration date itself without penalty.
After that:
| Time expired | What applies |
|---|---|
| Up to 90 days | Online renewal still available |
| More than 90 days | In-person renewal required |
| More than 5 years | Written and road tests required |
Note that driving within 90 days of expiration is a traffic infraction under Maine law — the renewal window doesn’t make the license valid.
How to Renew a Maine Driver’s License Step by Step
Step 1: Check Which Route Applies
Work through the online exclusions above, paying particular attention to the vision schedule — it’s the most common reason an otherwise straightforward renewal becomes an office visit.
Have ready: your current license, your Social Security number, and payment.
Step 2: Renew Online, at a BMV Branch, at a Mobile Unit, or at AAA
Online through the BMV portal. You’ll print a temporary license at home, with the permanent card posted in two to three weeks.
At a BMV branch office or mobile unit. You’ll take an eye exam if due, and need proof of Maine address, proof of lawful U.S. presence, and your Social Security number — or documentation showing you’re ineligible for one.
At AAA, for straightforward renewals only.
Branch offices accept cash, check, money order, debit or credit card — and the cardholder must be present for card payments. The online portal takes Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. All fees are non-refundable.
Step 3: If Your Card Doesn’t Arrive
Allow two to three weeks. If nothing has arrived within 60 days, call the BMV on 624-9000, extension 52114.
Maine Driver’s License Renewal Fees
| Credential | Under 65 | Age 65+ |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Class C | $30 (6 years) | $20 (4 years) |
| REAL ID Class C | $55 (6 years) | $40 (4 years) |
| Commercial (CDL) | $34 (5 years) | $27 (4 years) |
| REAL ID CDL | $59 | $47 |
| Replacement license | $5 | $5 |
| Non-driver ID | $5 (6 years) | $5 |
REAL ID costs extra in Maine — a $25 premium under 65, or $20 at 65 and over. That’s worth stating plainly, because at least one guide currently tells Maine drivers the upgrade is free. It isn’t, and the difference between a $30 renewal and a $55 one is significant.
Each endorsement, such as motorcycle or hazmat, adds $20.

Maine Driver’s License Renewal FAQs
Possibly. You needed one at your first renewal after turning 40, and then at every second renewal. Whether this one counts depends on where you are in that cycle — your renewal notice will say.
Only if you need it. A standard Maine license remains valid for driving and everyday identification; REAL ID is for boarding domestic flights and entering federal facilities. A passport does the same job. The first upgrade requires a branch visit with your birth certificate or passport, Social Security card, and two proofs of Maine address — residency documents being the ones people most often forget.
No. Online renewal closes at 90 days past expiration, so you’ll need a branch, mobile unit or AAA. You’re still well inside the five-year limit, so no retesting applies.
No. AAA handles straightforward renewals but can’t process name changes, new photographs, or changes to restrictions and endorsements — and isn’t an option for first-time REAL ID applicants.
No. Vehicle registration renewal is an annual municipal transaction involving excise tax paid to your town — an entirely different process with a different authority.
Two things decide how this goes: whether you’re due a vision test, which closes the online route, and whether you want a REAL ID — because that’s a branch visit and $25 either way.
